What Is AI Share of Voice, and How Is It Measured?

Knowledge Base > What Is AI Share of Voice, and How Is It Measured?

Definition

AI share of voice is the percentage of brand mentions in AI-generated answers that go to your brand, measured across a fixed set of prompts and compared with a named set of competitors. It’s the main metric in GEO, the way rankings and organic traffic are the main metrics in SEO. For how product-led teams use it, see GEO for PLG SaaS.

A simple version: if you track 50 prompts and the answers mention brands in your category 200 times, and 40 of those mentions are yours, your AI share of voice is 20%.

The three parts of the measurement

AI share of voice usually comes with two companion metrics. Together they show whether you’re mentioned, whether your pages are used and how prominently you appear.

AI share of voice and its companion metrics
Metric Question it answers How to calculate
Visibility (share of voice) How often are we named? Your brand mentions ÷ all tracked-brand mentions across the prompt set
Citation share How often are our pages the source? Citations of your domain ÷ all citations in the answers
Position How prominently are we named? Your average rank in answers that list several brands (1 = named first)

Some teams also track sentiment (how the answer describes you) and accuracy (whether facts such as your plan model are right).

How it’s measured

  1. Pick the prompts. 20–100 questions buyers ask in your category, grouped by stage: problem, shortlist, comparison, pricing.
  2. Pick the competitors. The brands you want to be measured against.
  3. Pick the engines. Several AI assistants and AI search tools, since their answers differ.
  4. Run each prompt repeatedly. The same prompt can give different answers from one run to the next, so one run is a sample, not a result.
  5. Count mentions, citations and positions, then calculate the three metrics above.
  6. Track the trend weekly or monthly.

Tools can automate this. See GEO analytics, the free LLM rankings tracker or tools for measuring visibility in AI search.

Caveats

  • The prompt set defines the number. A different prompt set gives a different share. Keep it fixed and publish it with the result.
  • It’s a sample. Report it with the number of prompts, runs and engines.
  • It’s not traffic. Pair it with AI-referred visits and signups in your analytics.

  • How is AI share of voice different from classic share of voice?

Classic share of voice measures your share of ads, search rankings or media mentions. AI share of voice measures your share of mentions inside answers written by AI assistants and AI search.

  • What's a good AI share of voice?

It depends on how many competitors you track and how crowded the category is. Track the trend against the same competitors rather than aiming for a fixed number.
