Developer Content Engine + SEO for an API Documentation Platform

Project Summary

ReadMe.com builds developer hubs and API documentation for software companies. Its audience splits between the developers who read docs every day and the product managers who decide which documentation platform to buy.

AUQ was engaged to build an owned content engine from the ground up: a new resource library on WordPress, a recruited and trained external writing team, a migration off the legacy blog subdomain, and an ongoing linkbuilding programme.

  • Resource library design and build in WordPress
  • Keyword research and content architecture for a developer audience
  • Author recruiting, testing, and management
  • Content migration off the blog subdomain
  • Linkbuilding, GA4 and Looker Studio reporting

The Challenge

  • Two audiences with different intents: developers reading docs and buyers comparing tools
  • Low bandwidth for content creation
  • A technical subject that most freelance writers cannot cover credibly
  • Over 100 legacy blog posts to assess, migrate, or retire
  • Declining organic click-through on the homepage as AI Overviews expanded

The Result

61 articles published or optimized in six months, and a 21% lift in referring domains.

The new resource library was ranking for 333 keywords a month after launch, and 74 keywords improved on their old blog versions. Total ranking keywords grew 11%, from 550 to 611.

Phase 1: Resource Library & Content Architecture

AUQ designed and built a new resource library in WordPress, on readme.com rather than the blog subdomain, so every article published would compound authority for the commercial site.

Keyword research split the roadmap by intent and format. Technical knowledge base entries answer definitional queries such as “api documentation format” and “api specification”. Long-form articles cover comparison and educational queries such as “graphql vs rest” and “sdk vs api”. Landing pages target buying intent such as “api documentation tool” and “api documentation generator”.

A glossary roadmap of roughly 90 API terms sits underneath all of it, sized by volume and grouped into clusters like API Basics, Advanced API Concepts, and API Best Practices. The library launched with a lower bounce rate than the blog it replaced, by 8 percentage points.

Stop leaving organic revenue on the table.

If your organic conversions are falling behind, you are losing market share every single day. Let us audit your website and build a strategy that actually scales.

Phase 2: Building a Technical Writing Team

Writers who can explain idempotent APIs without hand-waving are the constraint in this category, so AUQ treated recruiting as part of the SEO project.

AUQ screened roughly 90 technical writers across four sourcing rounds, reviewing published samples and assessing each one on whether they wrote about APIs in production and whether they freelanced actively. 40 were shortlisted, 7 were given paid test assignments, and 2 were kept on long-term.

Around that bench, AUQ built the operating system the  runs on: a style guide, a weekly content checklist, a shared content calendar with briefs attached to every row.

Phase 3: Migration, Linkbuilding & Reporting

AUQ audited over 100 legacy posts on the blog subdomain, keeping the ones with ranking keywords, mapping each to a new URL on the resource library, and optimizing them during the move. In six months the program covered 17 new posts and 42 optimizations, which together drew more than 4,000 pageviews.

For authority, AUQ reviews roughly 100 potential placements a month from SaaS and tech publishers, then buys the strongest 10 within budget. 98 placements have been secured to date at an average of $100 each. Alongside those, 337 new organic referring domains arrived, taking total referring domains from 3,016 to 3,652.

Reporting runs through GA4 and a Looker Studio organic dashboard, tracking keyword movement by cluster and traffic to each new and optimized URL. As AI Overviews pushed homepage impressions up and clicks down, the roadmap shifted toward middle and bottom of funnel content and competitor comparison pages, where intent is specific enough to still earn the click.
