A name server, or DNS server, plays a crucial role in translating human-readable domain names into machine-readable IP addresses. It serves as the guidepost that directs internet traffic to the correct destination, facilitating seamless navigation across the web.
When a user enters a domain name into a web browser, the name server initiates the resolution process by responding to DNS queries. It provides the accurate IP address for the requested domain, ensuring that users can access websites and online resources with ease.
An authoritative name server holds the official records for a specific domain. It is considered the ultimate reference for DNS information about that domain. The authoritative name server ensures that DNS queries are resolved accurately, providing the most up-to-date information about the domain.
To change name servers, log in to your domain registrar’s platform. Access the domain management settings and update the name server information to point to the new DNS servers. Keep in mind that after making changes, there is a propagation time for the updates to take effect across the internet.
Recursive name servers perform the full DNS resolution process on behalf of the client. They query other name servers until they obtain the final IP address, which is then returned to the client. In contrast, authoritative name servers provide the official DNS information about a specific domain.
After changing name servers, there might be a propagation time during which the updates need to spread across the internet. This propagation time can vary and depends on factors such as TTL (Time To Live) settings and the efficiency of the DNS infrastructure. Users may experience a delay in accessing the updated domain during this period.
